Photography 200 marks an extraordinary milestone: two centuries since humanity first found a way to make a moment of light endure. From the faint, almost dreamlike image captured by Nicéphore Niépce in the world’s oldest surviving photograph grew an art form that would forever change how we see, remember, communicate, and understand our world. Over the past 200 years, photography has documented history, revealed distant places, preserved the faces of those we love, exposed truth, created art, and given billions of people the power to say, this is what I saw.
